LET’S TURN THESE UPSIDE DOWN
Myths of Mindfulness & Meditation

Myth #1: Meditation should turn off your mind.

People really like to hold onto the misconception that meditation can help you “clear your mind” and teach you how to “stop thinking.” Meditation isn’t meant to turn off your mind. In fact, it’s a dynamic practice requires starting with the mind. Neuroscientists estimate we have between 60,000-80,000 thoughts a day so there’s no such thing as a thoughtless meditation. Meditation can help us change our relationship to our thoughts, but it can’t make them disappear.

Myth #2: Meditation has to be practiced in an ideal environment

Just like we can think thoughts in a noisy environment, we can also meditate in a noisy environment. While a quiet space helps to set the mood, it’s not a requirement for practicing meditation. It’s important to build a practice that is equally beneficial and meaningful whether you’re doing it in a corner of your home, on the subway or in the workplace.

Myth #3: Meditation should feel relaxing kind of like a massage

Meditation can feel peaceful, sure, but sometimes when we get going it feels like we’re swimming in an ocean of our thoughts the whole time. After an initial learning curve and learning the fundamentals, you will definitely feel the benefits; just give yourself some time to get there.
